Drug checking in Victoria - Up and Running!
Community Update 1
Victoria has legalised drug checking and this much needed and wanted health service is here for good!
An 18th month “implementation trial” of this particular model of drug checking service, is currently underway and Harm Reduction Victoria one of 3 important partners running it.
In this particular model, there is Mobile Drug Checking Service or 'Pop Up service' at up to10 music events and festivals throughout Victoria over the next 18 months.
A Fixed Drug Checking Service site will be set up at a central location, and is due to open its doors in the next 7 months.
The trial's been off to a busy start already, with hardly time to reflect, but we need to pause for a moment so we can bring you, our communities, up to speed!
Harm Reduction Victoria are hosting the first of a series of events to update our communities on this new service, how you can be involved over the 18 months, and how we can work together to make this a truly community-controlled service for all people who use drugs in Victoria!
Come join HRVic staff, volunteers, org members and other community to talk about HOW we achieved drug checking through community advocacy, WHAT the government's approach to this new reform has been and is, WHY this service is needed by our communities and get your input on how we as the service users are going to make sure we remain at the forefront of the running and governance of this service for our communities.
We want to know your thoughts and experience if any of the service so far.
We'll also discuss what jobs are available for people to apply for, and how to be involved in further consultations to design and oversee the service throughout the 18 month trial period.
This is HRVic's first community event, of many in what is shaping up to see 2025 as a huge year for harm reduction in Victoria!

The HRVic office and Odditorium is located across from Brunswick Station and one block from the Sydney Rd. Route 19 tram. Public parking options in this area is limited before 6pm. Parking available at Rosser St. carpark behind Bunnings ($3.94 per hr until 6 then FREE after 6pm )
