November 1st is International Drug Users Day.

Every year on International Drug Users Day, people who use drugs all over the world celebrate our history and affirm our rights.

Int. Network of People Who Use Drugs (INPUD) formally launched on IDUD in 2008 by drug user rights activists seeking to create an international platform where members of our community could confidently & proudly advocate for the health & human rights of people who use drugs globally. Every year since, this day is marked with a celebration of our diverse vibrant communities’ accomplishments, while also acknowledging our work is more critical than ever.

INPUD’s theme for 2024 is ‘drug use = our choice, abstinence = your choice, prohibition = no choice’. Reaffirming that the so-called ‘war on drugs’ is actually ‘a war on people who use drugs. ‘

Despite widespread criminalisation, on this day, we will celebrate our freedom to make choices, our right to bodily integrity and autonomy, and our inherent dignity.

For 2024 IDUD, following this theme, HRVic aim to spotlight the issues older drug users face by launching our ‘Getting On & Getting Old’ video at a 'Back in the Day' community dinner and panel with some of our 'older' community members.

We'll use this opportunity to encourage our younger community members to consult the ‘elders’ of our groups about the issues faced ‘back in the day’, issues faced now as well as what we all fear/hope facing all PWUD in our futures. Whether health issues and how we are treated as we age, to financial security and social and relationship/family issues of maintenance or isolation. Come tell us what you think we need to fight for!

While this is all happening, we will chow down on our regular community dinner. (Food truck type TBC)
