international drug users day 2026

WHAT's 'HUNG DRAWN & 1/4rd' mean?

Society routinely reduces people to a single identity. and Society routinely reduces people who use drugs to a single identity- .....that of a ‘criminal’. 'HUNG, DRAWN, and 1/4rd' The title of our Exhibition and Maker's Market Day, is a defiant nod to the historical punishment of nonconformity or ‘otherness'. (incl. drug use) Today, it stands for something else: being proudly 'HUNG' on gallery walls, 'DRAWN' from living/lived experience, and not letting that '¼ ' (or whatever amount) of our experience define our creative, unapologetically human, existence. Sometimes the best way to challenge a stereotype is simply to show people something they didn't expect to see. Self-medication, ‘recreation’, insight, spiritual exploration, to stay physically or mentally ‘functioning’ (or not) and to fight dis–ease - the reasons for so-called ‘drug use’ are as many, and as varied and as nuanced as the people who take them. Today we acknowledge and celebrate ALL OF OUR EXISTENCE in a collection of community art and celebration of the ingenuity and entrepreneurship of our community's emerging and established artists, creatives and makers.

What is International Drug User Day?

Every year, on 1 November, people who use drugs all over the world celebrate our history and affirm our rights. The International Drug Users Day provides a platform where drug user activists and our community can confidently and proudly advocate for the health, human rights, and dignity of people who use drugs globally, regionally, and at the country level. The International Drug Users Day is a celebration of the accomplishments of our diverse, vibrant communities, while also acknowledging that our work is more critical than ever. The International Drug Users Day marked an important milestone in the drug user’s rights movement, where the International Network of People who Use Drugs (INPUD), which was founded in 2006 in Vancouver, Canada, was formally launched in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 1 November 2008.

FAQs

Exhibition Questions - (A)
Market Questions - (M)

(A) How much does it cost to exhibit?
(M) How much does it cost to have a market stall?

Nothing. It's FREE!

(A) Ive never had my art in an exhibition before, can I participate still?

Yes! Of course! Every artist regardless of exhibition experience is welcome! We can help less confident artists with wiring up their work to hang and are here to help. So are the other artists.

(A) I don't have any new work, can I exhibit an older piece?

Yes! We know  we haven't given artists much notice so do not expect new work. We just want you to participate is all!

...And we love everything you do!

(M) What if I need more than one space/table?

No problem. We can sort it out before market day.

(A) Does my artwork need to literally be about or include 'drugs'?

No.  Of course not. We know that people come in more than one 'flavour' and their artworks will represent that.

HRVic acknowledges and celebrates our differences. How boring our world would be if we all looked, talked, thought and ultimately created, the same!
