Society reduces people who use drugs to a single identity.... 

of being a ‘criminal’.     

​Self-medication, ‘recreation’, insight, spiritual exploration, to stay physically or mentally ‘functioning’ (or not) and to fight dis–ease. The reasons for so-called ‘drug use’ are as many, as varied and as nuanced as the people who take them. 

 

Sunday November 01 is International Drug Users Day, when Harm Reduction Victoria throw open our doors for an exhibition to showcase the creativity, talent, humour and imagination of our diverse communities.

                               

 

 

 

​Instead of forcing artists to conform to a theme to create to, ‘Hung, Drawn and 1/4rd‘ is an exercise in pure creative autonomy. 

The title is a defiant nod to the historical punishment of nonconformity or ‘otherness'. (incl. drug use)    

​

Today, it stands for something else: being proudly hung on gallery walls, drawn from living & lived experience, not letting that ¼ or small part, of our experience define our creative, unapologetically human, existence. 

 

Sometimes the best way to challenge a stereotype is simply to show people something they didn't expect to see.
